Bruno Fernandes wins third consecutive Man Utd player of the month award

Bruno Fernandes has been named Manchester United’s player of the month for the third time in a row.

The Portugal star has cemented himself as a fan favourite at Old Trafford since his £47million transfer from Sporting in January.

Fernandes scored three goals and provided four assists in his first nine United games to win the awards for February and March before the season’s coronavirus-enforced suspension.

And he has continued his fine form since the restart last month, scoring a late equaliser from the penalty spot against Tottenham Hotspur and netting twice against Brighton on Tuesday.

Fernandes’ performances at the heart of the Red Devils midfield also contributed to United beating Norwich City to reach the FA Cup semi-finals, and he coasted to the June accolade with 64 per cent of the voting.

Fernandes has scored five goals in eight league games

Nearest rival and fellow midfielder Nemanja Matic finished second in the poll on United’s official app with 20 per cent, while Anthony Martial received 16 per cent of votes.

Fernandes picking up his third award means he now won the accolade the most times of any United player this season.

Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford have won the award twice, while Daniel James and Fred have won it once this campaign.

Fernandes – who won the Premier League Player of the Month award for February – has been praised for raising the performance levels of those around him and his arrival at Old Trafford helped kickstart a 15-game unbeaten run.

His presence in the team helped Anthony Martial score United’s first league hat-trick since 2013 during the 3-0 win over Sheffield United last week.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was quick to highlight the connection between Fernandes and Martial ahead of the restart last month.

He told Premier League Production s: “Anthony’s had a difficult season with injuries but he started the season really well and he’s finishing off…well, the season’s not finished yet but he did really well towards the end.

“He’s working hard and for me Anthony was on the way to his best season at Manchester United so let’s see if he finishes it off and kicks on again.

“Tony and Bruno [Fernandes] have hit it off together so it’s a partnership that we hope can flourish.

“We knew he was a quality player and knew that when he came in he would have an impact straight away but you never know if he’s going to settle early in a new country but he’s taken to it like a duck to water.”
