California Will Release 8,000 Inmates Due To COVID-19 Pandemic

California is set to free another 8,000 prisoners to slow down the increase of pandemic

Up to 8,000 prisoners can be released from Californian prisons as the coronavirus pandemic spreads across the state’s penitentiary system, the Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Department announced Friday.

“This is extremely vital for the well-being and protection of every citizen. Too many people have been detained for too long in institutions that spread miserable health, ” said the attorney in a statement.

Around 2,315 people are now the victim of COVID-19

The decision was made a few days after the replacement of a senior prison medical officer after criticizing that the transfer of prisoners caused an outbreak in state institutions. As of Friday, 2,315 people were ill with this virus and 31 people died, the department said.

Governor Gavin Newsom said in a press conference this week that prisoners from the California Institute of Men in China “should not have been transferred” to San Quentin state prison in late May.

Over 10,000 inmates were liberated across the state to slow the escalation of the virus

To be allowed to set free, prisoners must have 180 days or less of detention, must not serve a sentence for domestic violence or violent crime, or be considered at high risk of violence, the department said.
