Danny Murphy apologises for his controversial Liverpool comments

Danny Murphy has apologised for claiming some Liverpool players are not fit to lace Kevin de Bruyne’s boots.

The former Liverpool midfielder made the comment as he discussed plans for Manchester City to give the Reds a guard of honour on account of their title success.

It is customary in England for home teams to give the newly-crowned Premier League winners a guard of honour when they play away.

Pep Guardiola confirmed his Manchester City players would honour the tradition when Liverpool visit the Etihad next time out in the Premier League.

Murphy isn’t on board with the idea, and labelled it a “load of nonsense”.

Danny Murphy has apologised for his comments

He added that some Liverpool players aren’t fit to lace De Bruyne’s boots, sparking something of a backlash and prompting Murphy to issue an apology.

Murphy wrote on Instagram: “Yesterday on talkSPORT discussing the concept of the guard of honour I used a poor choice of wording which I apologise for in relation to Liverpool midfield.

“Just to clarify I have nothing but admiration and respect for all the LFC players and their incredible achievements over the last two years.

“I would hate for a misplaced throwaway phrase which wasn’t thought through to imply anything otherwise.

“I of course don’t always get it right when doing live TV and radio but will always hold my hands up and apologise when I don’t.”
