‘I Would Give My Life’ Mother Says While Being Sentenced For Killing Her Son

The mother of 5 years old said she would do anything to have her son back

A verdict against an Illinois woman who pleaded guilty to the murder of her 5-year-old son in April 2019 began on Thursday with testimonials from neighbors, audio recordings of the boy arguing with her mother, and testimony from her mother who she will do anything to bring him back.

Joanne Cunningham changed her request from innocence to guilt last December and faces up to 60 years in prison.

When the officers arrived at the scene the kid was already dead

The Herald said that the audio recording two weeks before AJ’s death brought tears to Cunningham and other family members when he tells his mother he wants “bad people” to harm her, so she will leave him and his brother with his father.

Police officers testified of an interview with Cunningham after calling 911 and before learning about A.J. he was already dead. They talked about text messages that she and A.J.’s father, Andrew Freund Sr., exchanged, speaking as if A.J. were still alive when they knew he was dead.

The forensic and autopsy reports claimed that the boy had multiple severe injuries.

Neighbors revealed that they saw the boy with marks for several years

Neighbors told the court that they saw A.J. with dark bruises for many years, black eyes, cuts, and scratches. A neighbor said he saw the boy on Halloween with bandages, but later found out that it wasn’t a costume – he was burned by burning water. Cunningham said he accidentally spilled on him.

2 suspects are accused of killing the boy

Cunningham and Freund Sr. are accused of killing the boy on April 15, 2019, forcing him to stay in the cold shower “for a long period of time” and beating him, then putting him to bed and locking him in his room where he died. The next day, Freund Sr. would have buried him in a shallow pit.

Investigators have discovered the lifeless body of A.J. in a rural area of Woodstock, Illinois. A boy was found wrapped in plastic and placed in a shallow grave.

The discovery occurred on April 25, exactly one week after Freund Sr. reported that his son passed away on April 18. The man called 911 and told the dispatcher that he couldn’t find AJ, and explained when he last saw it last night in their home near Dole Avenue in Crystal Lake.

Charges against Cunningham and Freud

Cunningham was initially charged with five murder charges, four for an aggravated battery, two for an aggravated battery, and a refusal to report the loss or death of a child. She pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder and other charges have been dropped. Bargaining does not offer the possibility of conditional freedom.

Freund Sr. has been charged with five murder charges, two charges of aggravating charges, an advance of aggravating charges, two charges of concealment of death by murder, and in a case of refusal to report a missing son or the death of a son. He remains in prison pending trial.
