Mikel Arteta admits “I don’t understand the rules” as he discusses Eddie Nketiah red card

Mikel Arteta admitted “I don’t understand the rules” as he discussed Eddie Nketiah’s red card in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City.

The Gunners went down to 10-men in the second half after Nketiah saw red for a foul on James Justin just four minutes after coming off the bench.

Nketiah was initially shown a yellow card before a VAR check saw Chris Kavanagh overturn his original decision to give the young forward his marching orders.

After the match, a frustrated Arteta told Sky Sports: “With the red card decision, he doesn’t see the player, you have to know that he is a young kid, it can be a red card.

“But then Leicester needs to play with 10 men after 42 minutes [Jamie Vardy’s foul on Shokdran Mustafi].

“I don’t understand the rules, since I have been in this country I have never seen a referee check any of the images. It’s the rules, I can do nothing now.”

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers also spoke out about the sending off after the match, and praised Kavanagh for getting the decision right.

He said: “It was a red card. I don’t think the kid meant it, he was stretching for it but the studs were up. I think they made the right decision.

“Kasper made some great saves in the first half. He is up there with the top keepers at this level. I think this is a really, really important point for us to keep the momentum going. I am delighted with it.”
